Piano Transport with Crane
When stairs and elevator are not an option — Piano Shift coordinates crane setup, traffic permit and transport in one job.
When is a crane transport necessary?

The most common reason for a crane transport is the absence of an elevator combined with a staircase that is too narrow or too steep. A full-size grand is 1.5 to 2 m wide and cannot be maneuvered around staircase landings without damaging walls or banisters. In such cases, entry through a suitable window or over the balcony is the only damage-free solution.
Historic buildings with protected interiors also often require the crane approach to protect the stairwell. Piano Shift assesses on-site whether a crane is necessary and what type — a small telescopic crane for narrow courtyards or a larger mobile crane for buildings with more standing space.
How a crane transport works
On-site survey
Before every crane transport we carry out a free site survey. We check the installation location, crane access, and the height and weight of the instrument.
Permit & authorities
We apply on your behalf for the required traffic permit and coordinate time windows with the authority and the crane operator.
Crane booking
Piano Shift works with certified crane operators in Vienna and Lower Austria, coordinating the appointment, standing space, and lifting equipment.
Transport day
On the day, our team secures the piano in a crane sling; the crane lifts the instrument through the window or over the balcony; our team receives it inside and positions it correctly.
Inspection & handover
After transport we inspect the instrument together with you for any damage and hand over the transport documentation.
Frequently asked questions about crane transport
When do I need a piano crane?
A crane is needed when the piano or grand cannot reach the destination via the stairwell or elevator. Typical situations: upper-floor apartment without elevator and too-narrow staircase, balcony access or large window as the only entry, or a very heavy concert grand in a historic building.
What does a crane transport for a piano cost?
The cost of a crane transport consists of the standard piano transport plus the crane work. The crane cost depends on the height, the weight of the instrument, and the accessibility of the installation location. Since every situation is individual, we ask for a personal site survey before transport. Call us or contact us via the form for a specific quote.
What permits are required for a crane transport?
In Vienna and most Lower Austrian municipalities, placing a mobile crane on public road space requires a traffic permit. Piano Shift coordinates the application for this permit in consultation with the crane operator and the relevant authority. Please plan for a lead time of at least one week.
